In October 2003 the first Centre for Language and Literature of the Low Countries “Erasmianum” in the Czech Republic was opened by prof. dr. Koen Jaspaert, by then acting Secretary General of the Netherlands Language Union. The mission of the Centre is to be a point of contact for all people interested in the language, literature and culture of the Netherlands and Flanders, especially in Moravia and Silesia.

Main tasks of the Centre:

  • Information source on the Netherlands and Flanders, exhibitions and events with Dutch and Flemish themes in Moravia and Silesia.
  • Organisation of scientific and cultural events e.g. thematic conferences and workshops, author reading sessions and cinema.
  • Organisation of small exhibitions in the Centre and assistance with organising exhibitions with a Dutch or Flemish theme in Moravia and Silesia.
  • Meeting point for native speakers of Dutch in the region.

The renovation of the building and the terraces has been financially subsided by: the Netherlands Language Union, the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, the Orde van den Prince section Diest, the twin city platform Veenendaal-Olomouc, the city of Veenendaal, Palacký University and the Czech Ministry of Education.
